WVMI receives URAC accreditation
Charleston, W.Va. – The West Virginia Medical Institute (WVMI) announced today that it has been awarded Health Utilization Management Accreditation from URAC, a Washington, DC-based health care accrediting organization that establishes quality standards for the health care industry.
URAC developed the Health Utilization Management Standards to ensure that organizations providing utilization review or utilization management services follow a process that is clinically sound and respects patients’ rights. Most medical care paid for by third-party payers undergoes some form of utilization review to determine if it is medically necessary.
“URAC accreditation is a symbol of excellence and demonstrates to our customers, stakeholders, and most importantly, health care consumers, our commitment to quality,” said WVMI Chief Executive Officer John Wiesendanger.
URAC’s Health Utilization Management Standards require an organization to establish and implement a three-step process to determine if a proposed medical treatment or service is medically necessary.
“Quality health care is crucial to our nation’s welfare, and it is important to have organizations that are willing to measure themselves against national standards,” said Alan P. Spielman, URAC president and CEO.
